Does exactly what is claimed and does it in an easy to understand, uncomplicated way. Delivered yesterday afternoon and and by 10pm yesterday evening I had converted three Sony Camcorder tapes and a VHS to.mov file format. I can't comment on the video editing software as I'll use iMovie to stitch things together but as a means of transfer and conversion this is a great product. Just follow the instructions during set up step by step and you'll be converting old videos in no time! It was good while it lasted. The capture device seems to work OK. But suddenly, after a couple of days and for no apparent reason, the Arcsoft Showbiz software that came with it just stopped recording video - just audio and a black screen (and there was no problem with the cables).

Then it started freezing every time, requiring umpteen PC restarts. After several hours of attempted uninstalling (it claimed to have a file running somewhere that I couldn't close), I eventually installed a trial version of the newer software from their website. Which did work - but if I want to keep it I'll have to pay for it in two weeks. Given that I've already paid for something that's supposed to work, I don't feel inclined to shell out again. So overall, it would be great if it worked. But, like vast amounts of technology, it simply doesn't.

The Hardware works fine and I had a very quick delivery, which is why I have given it three stars. The software did not install from the disk on my W7 laptop and I had to search software from their website to download it there. I am hooking up my night vision monocular to it and it picks up the image ok but when I hit record it tells me that 'no video signal detected' which is odd seeing as it is on the screen!

I have tried selecting every video standard available and none work so I have had to install some software called 'iSpy' and have managed to get it working through that, although it means I cant use the record button on the hardware. So all in all it does what I need it to do but not sure why I am unable to use the software with my monocular. Installed on a Vista laptop easily enough, but then experienced major problems trying to transfer some old VHS family movies. The software kept coming up with a 'copy protection' message, and blocking the capture.

This happened on two different VHS tapes, taken at different times with different camcorders, so the product was basically useless! After reading more reviews, it appears that I was not the omly customer to experience this proble Emailed support - got an automatic reply saying busy till after Christmas, so still waiting for a reply. Eventually, after much research online, found a fix consisting of a simple change to the arcsoft.ini file. Changed this, which took all of 2 minutes, and now working well. Why have the software developers not made this change? I bought this for a slightly unusual reason.

I wanted to use my laptop as a monitor for my old sega saturn (to play 10 player bomberman). Setup was fairly easy, just a bit of fiddling about to get the audio driver working (there are instructions for this in the box). The actual instruction booklet is not particularly helpful and is full of confusing sentences and grammatical errors. Luckily I remember the days of windows 3.1 where you had to edit autoexec.bat and config.ini to get anything working - compared to that it was easy. Next to get a picture up, I don't want to record anything so I used VLC to view the image from the ezcap: audio was fine, but the picture was terrible - fuzzy, blurry, bad colours etc. Nothing I did fixed this, I tried every setting available.

So, on to the next plan. I tried DScaler (4). this gave me an almost perfect image straight away and with the built in 'old game' filter all is good. No audio though. But some extended fiddling with the settings fixed that. Plugged laptop into projector and bomberman is ready for my birthday party! I can't comment on the included software as I haven't installed it.

Conclusion: Works fine for what I need and is very cheap, is a bit of a hassle to set up so if you're not confident with figuring out problems on your computer either get someone to help or buy something else. Note: Dscaler does not list ezcap116 as supported hardware but it does work. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
