Inspiration and the Relationship of Divine and Human Authorship This is part of a continuing series of posts on the fundamental Catholic doctrines of Scripture. It picks up from my last post in inspiration, only dealing now with the relationship between human and divine in the composition of Scripture.
Jesus was God in the flesh or 'incarnate'. Jesus was and is perfect in every way. Jesus never committed a sin as a human being. Jesus had self control and although tempted by Satan himself, Jesus did not succumb.
Bad Human Qualities
Jesus was and is fully committed to doing God's will. Jesus was devoted to the heavenly Father. Jesus was the master of conveying God's word to man with no contradictions. Jesus had compassion on people he came in contact with. Jesus never gave up, even when his closest friends denied him, he was beaten and he was crucified on the cross. Jesus is reigning in heaven at the right of God.
Negative Human Qualities
Jesus is a priest, profit and a king. Jesus died a horrible death so that human beings can be saved from their sins through obedience to God. Christians believe that Jesus is both fully human and yet fully divine. He claimed to be God on many occasions ('God the Son'. Before Abaham was - I AM.My Father and I are one. I am in the Father and the Father is in me.), and his miracles culminating in the mighty resurrection testifie d to this fact.
But he was also fully human; he got tired, he had emotions (he wept when Lazarus died, he was angry and turned over the moneychangers' tables in the Temple) and he ate and drank as would any human. Some pseudoChristian sects claim that jesus was 'Spirit' and nothing more; some claim that he was just a human ut a good teacher - nothing more. But the Bible clearly reveals that Jesus was both man and God, and mainstream Christian denominations attest to this fact. Jesus was Both human and divine Christians believe that Jesus was fully human - with human needs and emotions (in the Bible we are told that he ate, drank, wept, got angry, bled, and so on). If God had not become fully human then salvation would not be possible according to Christian doctrine. Also, Christians believe that Jesus was fully divine - and not somehoow subservient to a 'higher' God. Christians believe that Jesus was the third person in a Trinitarian God - the Father, the Holy Spirit - and the Son, Jesus, all as one God, yet three persons.
Although each individual in the Trinity has its own function (ie The Father alone knows when the end of the world will come, Jesus alone is the means to Salvation and will be the Judge of all, the Holy Spirit alone is the means for God to reveal himself to us), Christians believe that Jesus is fully God. Some sects believe that Jesus is not divine in the same way as the majority of Christians (eg Jehovah's Witnesses) but Jesus himself claimed to divine in many references in the gospels, as well as claiming to be fully human. He claimed it of Himself, and proved it by His works on earth, and proves it by the way He works in people's lives today. Taste and see, repent and trust in Him and you'll understand the why and the how in a much clearer way.
In one sense, we already possess a measure of divine (or godly) nature, since “all human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny” (“The: A Proclamation to the World,” Ensign, Nov. In another sense, however, because we have not yet fully become like Heavenly Father, divine nature is something we must “be partakers of,” as the Apostle Peter said. He contrasted divine nature with the “the corruption that is in the world” and said that we partake of this divine nature through the “exceeding great and precious promises” given to disciples of Christ.
These include the promises of “peace in this this world, and eternal life in the world to come”. Through the Atonement, we can ultimately become like our Heavenly Father if we keep our covenants. To become more like Him means to take on His nature—the divine nature.
Associated with this divine nature are certain spiritual attributes, which we can pray to obtain and strive to possess. You can find them taught throughout the scriptures (for instance, see ).
